The presence of the Asian community is ever-growing as we approach their neurologic center, China Town. Taking this small street as a starting point, the community explodes within inner Sydney and spreads as an expanding wave changing the aesthetic of the city. It becomes an intrinsic part of Sydney’s body, the streets filled with a community whose strong iconography merges with and transforms the city’s own. The identities of these two entities, the city and the Asian community, co-exist as water and oil - they try to maintain their unaltered states. Nevertheless, they break free and blend in the merging process, becoming neither pure oil nor water. The iconography becomes another type of conquest, displacing the established and replacing it with something new. An economically stronger community gains ground, little by little. Text: Daniel G.
